  2.     Ordinarily, the direction of 
  3. gravity is aligned with a main 
  4. axis of a structure, such as a 
  5. room, so that both information 
  6. about gravity and visual cues 
  7. cooperate in determining 
  8. perceived orientation. This also 
  9. holds true outdoors, where the 
  10. ground is horizontal and trees, 
  11. buildings, and the like are 
  12. truly vertical. But in some 
  13. cases, such as those of the 
  14. tilted rooms, a conflict exists 
  15. between information about 
  16. gravity and visual cues. One 
  17. way to explain the outcome of 
  18. this conflict is in terms of 
  19. visual capture. Not only do our 
  20. own bodies look like they are 
  21. tilted if they remain upright 
  22. when we are inside a tilted 
  23. room, because the visual 
  24. information overpowers the 
  25. gravity-based information, but 
  26. they feel tilted, too. If so, the 
  27. veridical gravity-based 
  28. information is not directly 
  29. taken into account; instead, 
  30. the perceptual system uses the 
  31. distorted, proprioceptive 
  32. perception of body orientation 
  33. in the computation of 
  34. environmental orientation. As 
  35. a result, all information about 
  36. horizontal and vertical 
  37. orientation is now congruent 
  38. rather than in conflict.
